The Magnus Hirschfeld Society, founded in 1983, is an achievement of the Gay and Lesbian Movement. It is dedicated to the work of Magnus Hirschfeld and the Institute for Sexual Science, to prevent them from being praised in an unreflected manner or forgotten. Research by Manfred Baumgardt, Ralf Dose, Manfred Herzer, and Hans-Günter Klein was invaluable in preparing the exhibition.
In 1992, the Magnus Hirschfeld Society set up the Research Center on the History of the Sexual Sciences, financed through job creation funds. This exhibition was produced by Research Center staff members.
The exhibition was shown for the first time in 1994 in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Institute for Sexual Science shown in the Gay Museum, Berlin. The exhibition was to be seen later in Germany at several places, likewise a Spanish and English version was on exhibit in Spain and in the USA.
From the International Nazi Persecutee Relief Fund the Magnus-Hirschfeld Society and the Gay Museum upon the request of Pink Triangle Coalition (administered through the ASTRAEA Lesbian Action Foundation) have received monies from the US government in 2001. According to the award letter from the US Department of State the funds were specifically granted “to promote public education and remembrance of the gay men and lesbians who were murdered by the Nazis or otherwise persecuted during the Nazi period.”

With a part of the money the online-version of the exhibition was realized by the Magnus-Hirschfeld society.
